Composite vs. Wood Deck Building; Is there a difference?

Composite vs. Wood Deck Building; Is there a difference?

When it comes to building a deck, we never take shortcuts. There are a lot of right ways to build a deck, and a lot of wrong ways! We build every deck the way it should be built and never cut corners. Here are some of the ways we are different:

  • Picture Framing: This gives the deck a clean, professional finished look and frames in the decking, including any benches and steps.
  • Breaker Boards: “Breaker boards”, or “raceways” again, help create a clean finished look and eliminate the need for random butt joints (where deck boards meet). We only use butt joints in areas where it doesn't make sense for a breaker board. In areas where you need stronger joints, we use mitre joints or a mortise and tenon joint. If you look in any high end decking magazine or brochure, you will see decks with picture framing and breaker boards.
  • Hidden Fasteners: On composite decks, we are using fasteners between the deck boards that attach to the joists throughout most of the deck. You don’t have to screw down the boards in these areas and it creates a cleaner look. The ends of all deck boards, all “picture framing”, “breaker boards” and steps are screwed down to ensure the boards don’t move with the extreme heat and cold we get.
  • Concrete Footings: Some contractors will use pier pads, which are small concrete deck post supports that sit on top of the ground. We dig code size footings below the frost line so they will not move and ensure your deck is properly supported for the life of your deck. Pier pads tend to move over time which can cause sagging in the deck or failure.
  • Finished steps: A lot of contractors will build steps with deck boards on the top but exposed substructure everywhere else. We finish out the steps on every deck we build. This includes the installation of the treads, risers, and handrails (if needed). Steps are a great addition to any deck and provide a safe and easy way for access.

Benefits of Composite Decking

Unlike natural pressure-treated wood decking, composite deck boards are able to withstand more severe changes in weather conditions. The composite material of the boards can handle higher levels of UV exposure without fading, are mold-resistant in wet weather conditions, and do not expand and contract as much as wood decks would in cold climates…all without requiring any additional treatment or added protection. The plastic composite material that makes up the boards is also resistant to insect damage such as woodworm and beetles.

Composite decking is a great choice for your outdoor living space because it is:

  • Durable: Composite decking is made from a combination of wood and plastic, which makes it very strong and resistant to wear and tear. It can withstand the elements, including sun, rain, snow, and ice.
  • Low-maintenance: Composite decking requires very little maintenance. You won't have to worry about staining or sealing it, and it is resistant to mold and mildew.
  • Eco-friendly: Composite decking is often made from recycled materials, so it is a good choice for the environment.
  • Easy to clean: Composite decking is easy to clean with soap and water.
  • Beautiful: Composite decking comes in a variety of colors and styles, so you can choose the perfect one to match your home.

If you are looking for a durable, low-maintenance, and eco-friendly decking material, composite decking is a great option.
